Tainted Khaki, Fainted Hopes------------------SAT PAL





If we peep into the past, we will definitely come to understand the frightening essence of the Khaki, which used to inculcate a sense of becoming law-abiding citizens all the time. That was the time when khaki reminded us of its real power of being a protector of the system of faith in the functioning of the police mechanism in the country. Those days are gone and so those memories are fast fading out of our minds. The cops and their Khaki uniform is not at all being taken seriously these days since we come across enormous unusual incidents quite often which continue to shake our confidence.



The latest is an incident that took place in Mumbai where the top brass of the police were caught ‘shaking a leg’ with gangster and criminal mafia. They were dancing on the tune of Don, history sheeters and undesirable elements. One of the IPS officers was also involved in this show of disgrace on the eve of a religious festival. Of course, this is only one incident that is enough to speak of senior police officer’s association with dreaded elements trying to control the functioning of the government agencies with their muscle and money power.



It is an irony that an elected M.P. from Rajasthan has been forced to go on hunger strike to put pressure on the state government to bring to books an absconding senior police officer involved in a rape case a many years ago. There are a number of such cases in which involvement of the kaki is talked openly and spreads with the word of mouth.





In one of the much discussed case these days an officer of the level of a Director General Police has been involved beyond any doubt and eyebrows are being raised on the quantum of the sentence by various sections of the society including socialites and eminent personalities. It is astonishing to note that the tainted super cop used his influence to delay justice continuously for 19 years. This case has also opened a new Pandora box of leveling allegations on each other bya present and two former Chief Ministers of a neighboring state of the national capital that are known political adversaries. Though the case has become a hot issue for the media and is becoming a subject matter of the headlines daily, people are afraid of the ultimate outcome of the case. The case will continue to be in the limelight during the coming years. If we look into the pending cases against the police officers in this neighboring state of the national capital, we will be shocked to learn the statistics. The khaki has been fully exposed as criminal cases are pending against not less than 450 police officers in this progressive state. 19 out of 21 districts of the state are affected by such cases. The number could have been much more as most of the cases are settled mutually or not even been reported at all due to fear of police backlash. One of the national dailies has reported that FIR’s are being filed only in 10 per cent of the cases. These facts are alarming. With tainting of the khaki the hopes are, infact, fading. Let us all pray to the almighty to grant us wisdom to tackle such situations.
