A Heaven In Jail---------Sat Pal



The state governments have been claiming to undertake reforms in their jails though it has not been possible by any of them to turn their jails into heaven where the inmates probably could not feel any dearth of comforts. The efforts and claims are numerous which are also being disseminated forcefully to give an impression of the welfare aspects of the governments. The claims are definitely like bringing moon on this earth, anyhow, there are people who believe in these tall claims. Despite that, nobody likes to be an inmate in the jail. But, we are afraid, that many people may like to be in the jails, of and on, as one comes across a number of stories appearing in the papers stating that there is infinite freedom in jails and huge possibilities of wish fulfillment, though by paying a price. It is not a bad bargain to achieve a particular comfort in exchange of some money in jail where it becomes impossible to dream freely.

There are certain instances, which have come to our notice. A jail in Haryana has become a dream comfort zone for the dreaded gangsters. It is unusual though true, as true as emergence of dawn after pitched darkness of night. In Bhondsi jail in Haryana, the gangsters have been partying, relishing five star cuisines, watching blue films with the help of DVDs, making hay in credit business, using mobile phones, capturing snaps, smoking and drinking alongwith senior police officials. All this is possible and protected on making payments to high ups in jail. This is a heaven in fortified jail. This has been revealed through a sting operation conducted by a TV channel. Will the authorities wake up to this?

The state of Punjab boasts of its reforms in jails. The government has been a bit sensitive to the loneliness of inmates serving long sentences. It has of late realized that such prisoners generally indulge in notorious activities inside the jail i.e. they become druggist, rapists and indulge in even sodomy. They also become violent just because of their forced detachment from their loved one family members and because of their unfulfilled sex desires. This all develops in their attitude due to their longer stay in jail barracks where they are forced to put up on the whims of the jail authorities. The state government has since resolved this different problem. The government is mooting to offer a week’s time olive to such inmates. They are likely to be offered a soothing stay with their children and life companions to provide then an opportunity to do away of their mental and other emotional woes. Of course they would be able to satisfy their sexual lust and express their affectionate sentiments by freely interacting with their kids and young children. All this could be true in specially designated residential suites in side the jails. Is not going to be a heavenly experience? Of course without making any under the table payment but it is all going to come free of charge--courtesy, the government?
